According to the ASAM criteria, withdrawal management (detoxification) refers not only to the attenuation of the physiological and psychological features of withdrawal syndromes but also to the process of interrupting the momentum of compulsive use in persons diagnosed with substance use disorder.
Usually, the first 72 hours of withdrawal carry the most severe symptoms, health risks and require safely manages the acute physical symptoms and emotional support.
However, medical detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use.
Although detoxification alone is rarely sufficient to help individuals with substance use disorders achieve long-term abstinence, for some persons it is a strongly indicated precursor to effective drug addiction treatment.
